SECTION 4 – Lecture on Volcanoes
Audio Script:
Lecturer: Today, we’ll talk about volcanoes. A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust where lava, ash, and gases escape. There are three main types: shield volcanoes, composite volcanoes, and cinder cones.
Shield volcanoes have gentle slopes and are formed by runny lava. Composite volcanoes are more dangerous because their eruptions are explosive. Cinder cones are the smallest type, formed from fragments of rock.
The most active volcanic region on Earth is the Ring of Fire, which surrounds the Pacific Ocean.
Volcanoes can cause significant damage. Apart from lava flows, ash clouds can disrupt air travel for days. One of the worst eruptions, Mount Tambora in 1815, caused global temperature drops.
Scientists monitor volcanoes using seismographs, gas sensors, and satellite images. These tools help predict eruptions but cannot provide exact timing.
